"I look at my children differently now."
When Allyson and her husband Miles separated, Allyson knew she wanted to protect their kids from the parental conflict. Miles was very angry and, "I was afraid of what kind of information he was giving the children. I wanted to make sure they didn’t feel like they had to take sides or were being used as pawns."
At first, she tried to introduce her kids—Andy, now seven, and Rebecca, four—to other single moms and their children. She quickly learned that it wasn’t working. "Andy said, ‘Mom, can we not tell [other kids] that daddy’s not living with us any more?’ He thought that he was the only child in the world who was going through this. That’s when I thought I had to get them to talk about their feelings with someone outside the family," she says.
She chose Families in Transition (FIT). "I liked how parents and kids were tied into each other. They would go on Saturday and I would go on Thursday."
Allyson took part in counselling and a weekly group discussion involving eight adults. The kids each had their own age-appropriate discussion groups.
Allyson’s group explored such issues as parenting schedules, how to listen to your children so that they will talk to you and how to speak so they will listen. "I felt very comfortable with [my counsellor. Even my kids did—there was no resistance to going to see her alone."
Before the separation, "Andy did more attention seeking behaviour because I was caught up in arguments with my husband. I would get so angry at Miles and I would snap at him and then I would see my daughter do that." FIT provided her with the tools to reduce conflict with her ex-husband. "The key is the two people going through the divorce have to maintain an amicable relationship or else the children sense it. Andy seeing that Miles and I are conversing and communicating helps so much. FIT also gave us guidelines on how to introduce a new partner. That was very important."
Allyson’s relationship with her kids is stronger than ever. "The different tactics I learned at FIT about how to listen and make them know that their feelings are important too – they a have a lot going on and they are pretty smart. I look at them differently now that way."
Her children are thriving because of it. "My kids are doing great. They are such happy kids. When they are with each of us they are in a happy environment now. It’s great when people come up to me and say, ‘your kids are doing so well.’ I would definitely recommend FIT."
