Who Cares What You Think?
We do.
"There is a new council at City Hall. What would you like to see them make a priority for the city?"
"I'm new to the country so I don't know the system. And I don't have
voting rights. I feel that new immigrants—if they are paying property tax—should
have a voice in local government. I own property, I'm paying my
taxes, I should have a say."
Jas, 51
"Oh don't get me started! First off, slash their salary. Then reduce
property taxes. Make it a priority that there are no hungry or homeless
in Toronto. Improve transit and bring in more affordable housing. We need
a mayor like Hazel McCallion."
Melody, 52
"Get kids off the street and create better programs for them, especially
black kids."
Jesse, 38
"You know, I've never voted in my life… I have no time, I'm too lazy.
What can the city do for me? Build better roads maybe. And snow removal.
You know what the city does worst? Landscaping… architecture."
Sandeep, 32
"I'd like to see better maintenance on the streets. Why does it take
six months to a year to fix a road? Also, more community services,
getting kids out of gangs and getting them jobs to give them a chance. And
homelessness. There's way too much."
Lynn, 29
"There's a huge discrepancy between the rich and the poor. University
is inaccessible to lots of people who have the marks to go, but
they can't afford it. If you're getting good marks, there should be a way
for you to get through it."
Carmen, 44
