It Takes a Nation to Raise a Generation

On November 26, Campaign 2000 released the 2007 national report on child and family poverty: It Takes a Nation to Raise a Generation. The report shows that at 11.7% the child poverty rate is exactly the same as it was in 1989 when all federal parties pledged to eradicate child poverty by the year 2000. After a decade of growing economy - when the richest 10% saw 31% income increases - prosperity is eluding poor families.

The report highlights that 788,000 children live in poverty in Canada. While 41% of low-income children live in families with at least one parent working full- time all year, the risk of living in poverty is not the same for all children. For example, children of recent immigrants have a 1 in 2 chance of living in poverty, 40% of First Nations children living outside of First Nations communities and 34% of racial minority children live in poverty, as do 28% of children with disabilities.

It Takes a Nation to Raise a Generation concludes with a call for a National Poverty Reduction Strategy. The eight-point strategy asks for increases to the minimum wage (to $10/hour); National Child Benefit Supplement (to $5100/year); and work tax credits (to $2400/year); as well as for broadening the Employment Insurance eligibility and investing in social housing, early learning and child care.

Press Release: End Child and Family Poverty in Canada

Campaign 2000's 2007 National Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Canada shows that 788,000 children live in poverty in Canada. A startling 41% of low-income children live in families with at least one parent working full-time all year yet do not earn enough to lift their families out of poverty. The risk of living in poverty is not the same for all children. Poverty hits children in racialized, First Nations and recent immigrant communities much more often.
