"I thought, 'what the heck am I going to do?' "

Alfred was a successful entrepreneur in the midst of a difficult divorce and custody battle when he was diagnosed with kidney failure. His health deteriorated rapidly, compounded by diabetes and, later, heart failure. “I needed dialysis four times a day, every day. It took up all my time.” Life was exhausting.
Unable to work, Alfred soon found himself in financial trouble. “I used up my savings to pay my rent and bills. When that ran out I thought, ‘what the heck am I going to do now?’” He applied for disability benefits and his case worker suggested he call Family Service Toronto for additional help. “The case worker recognized that I was going through a lot of sudden changes in my life and he said I needed to talk to someone. At first I didn’t want to go, but then I realized he might be right.”
At FST, his counsellor helped him understand the changes he was going through. “He was very wise. He didn't push me, he just let me talk.” Together they worked out ways to deal with his emotions and the changes in his life. “He was someone to talk to when I had nobody to talk to. It always helped me to know he was there. I see a lot of people going to FST. I see a lot of people waiting to see other counsellors. Too many people would be lost without it.”
