Ted BETTS

Ted is a partner with the law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, Toronto. He practises corporate and infrastructure law and has extensive transactional experience in mergers and acquisitions, and large-scale infrastructure, power, construction and development projects.

Ted's corporate practice consists of all aspects of the purchase and sale of businesses, corporate and project finance, private equity investments and commercial transactions. He advises a number of clients, particularly financial service providers and technology companies, in their corporate development and growth, and their acquisitions and financings, as well as their commercial activities and regulatory matters. In particular, Ted has gained considerable experience in the payment card and merchant-acquiring industry, working on the acquisitions, card programs and processing agreements. Ted also has a significant practice in construction law having worked on several large scale construction projects and infrastructure developments.

In his corporate practice, Ted advises large and small businesses on shareholdings, incorporation, corporate maintenance, dissolution and corporate finance. He has developed considerable expertise on shareholder matters, including the drafting of shareholder agreements, resolving shareholder disputes and negotiating buyouts. He also has had significant involvement in various large and small multi-step reorganizations for Canadian and international clients.

Ted has extensive construction law and infrastructure project experience in all aspects of tendering, negotiating and drafting of contracts, project management, financing and sales. He has developed specialized expertise in negotiating and drafting construction contracts on large-scale construction, infrastructure and development projects, such as hydroelectric and solar power generating stations.

Ted had also worked on many infrastructure financings, acquisitions, design-build and design-and-operate projects, such as hydro power plants for Ontario Power Generation, infrastructure projects for the World Bank and Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation, an electrical power plant in Ontario, a gas production facility in Alberta, and large construction developments for the AstraZeneca Canadian Business Centre, Chateau Viger, the Meadowvale Business park, Casino Windsor, the new CNIB national headquarters and office complex and several office building complexes in and around Toronto.

Ted has written papers and presented seminars on tendering, shareholders agreements and general corporate law. Ted is a member of the Business law and Construction law Sections of the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association.

First elected to the FST Board at AGM 2008.
