Miriam DiGIUSEPPE, Vice-President

Ms. DiGiuseppe spent three years in a refugee camp as a child with her family. Her fist-hand experience as an immigrant to Canada and in our school system has translated in a lifelong interest in issues affecting children and their families in the education system and the community.

In Ms. DiGiuseppe's 35-year career in education with the Toronto Board of Education and the Toronto District School Board, she has worked at the elementary, secondary and adult levels as a Teacher, Curriculum Consultant, board-wide Co-ordinator of English as a Second Language (ESL), board-wide Supervising Principal of International Languages, and Principal of 3 inner-city, multicultural and multiracial schools. She has served on the Board of Directors of on-site Daycare Centres.

Ms. DiGiuseppe has worked with teachers, parents and community organizations on programs, which address educational, social and equity issues and focus on positive change. She has provided leadership for the development of numerous programs and curriculum documents for the Toronto Board of Education, as well as worked on programs and documents published by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the International Children’s Institute, the World Health Organization and the Community Social Planning Council of Toronto.

Ms. DiGiuseppe has been involved in organizing local, provincial, national and international educational conferences and teacher training opportunities, including being Principal and Director of ESL and ESL Specialists’ Courses at York University . She served as the President of the Ontario ESL Teachers’ Association and has made many educational presentations in Canada and abroad.

Since her retirement from the TDSB, Ms. DiGiuseppe worked internationally providing leadership to a psychosocial program for school children affected by war and its aftermath in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

First elected to the FSA Board at AGM 2005, Miriam was appointed Vice-President in 2006.

Miriam has chaired the Access and Equity Committee. She is currently a member of the Strategic Planning Working Group.
