Media Alert – Tamil families face uphill battle in new country,
says new report
Toronto, April 26, 2005 – The findings of the
Tamil Mental Health Project will be released on Friday, April 29, at
10:15 a.m. at the Scarborough Civic Centre, Council Chamber. This
report is the culmination of interviews with 1,600 Tamil men and women
in the GTA assessing the factors affecting their mental health, including
anxiety, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and perceived quality
of life. The study identifies:
- the nature and extent of mental health issues in the Tamil community;
- service gaps in the areas of newcomer settlement and adaptation; and
- the need for language-specific, culturally appropriate
services in the social
service/mental health sector.
