CND Philosophy Statement:
We are facilitators who support communities and neighbourhoods in dynamic processes of civic engagement and meaningful participation to affect sustainable social change and inclusion.
We work from within an anti-oppression framework.
We value the exchange of knowledge and embrace opportunities for learning and capacity building – for ourselves and for others.
We do this by focusing on issues identified by communities through open dialogue by using a range of tools and approaches.
Working together to strengthen communities
The Community and Neighbourhood Development Unit (CND) works with groups, networks and coalitions to identify the issues that are important to their communities, as well as to develop and implement strategies to addres them. We do this in a number of ways such as:
- community mobilization and advocacy
- organizational development
- health promotion
- community economic development
- outreach and partnership research on a variety of community issues
- promoting access to services
- strengthening social support networks
In our work we utilize a community development approach: we build partnerships with newcomers, ethno-specific and neighbourhood groups, families, youth and seniors.
All aspects of our program are guided by community advisory councils who help us to identify priorities, direct our activity and evaluate our progress.
CND carries out or participates in a number of initiatives:
