AVP: The New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project

Description:
Founded in 1980 in New York in reaction to neighbourhood incidents of anti-gay violence and the failure of the criminal justice system to respond. Serves lesbian, gay transgender, bisexual and HIV-positive victims of violence, and others affected by violence, by providing free and confidential services enabling them to regain their sense of control, identity and evaluate their options, and assert their rights. In particular, the Project’s staff and volunteers assist survivors of hate-motivated violence, domestic violence, and sexual assault, by providing therapeutic counselling and advocacy within the criminal justice system and victim support agencies, information for self-help, referrals to practicing professionals, and other sources of assistance. The Project actively seeks to serve clients from the full range of New York’s diverse lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and HHIV-positive communities. Also serves the community by providing education and advocacy regarding these issues.

B.C. Association of Specialized Victim Assistance and Counselling Programs

Description:
Since 1992, the Association has been a provincial (BC) voice for survivors of violence and the community-based services that support them. The association has created a strong communication network among Community-Based Victim Assistance programs, Sexual Assault Centres and Stopping the Violence Counselling programs across BC. We have also established important links with government, policy makers, legislators and other provincial organizations.

  • Responding to Lesbian Relationship Violence: An Ethical Challenge by Janice L. Ristock Discusses Ristock’s recent community-based research into lesbian relationship violence in Canada. Based on interviews with women who have experienced lesbian relationship violence and with feminist service providers, and calls for “analyses… that account for the complexities of women’s lives.”

  • LGBT Anti-Violence Project: Creating Strong and Safe Queer Communities Abuse in Same-Sex Relationships - Abuse in same-sex relationships is a serious problem within lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and Two-Spirit communities.
  • “Healthy Relationships for Gay Men” - Men who identify as gay, bisexual, Two-Spirit or queer face unique challenges in creating and sustaining healthy, satisfying intimate relationships for many reasons.
  • Transgender People and Relationship Abuse - Due to transphobia and its impact (violence, loss of employment, loss of loved ones), many trans people and their partners experience isolation and invisibility. This can create vulnerability to violence. Trans people who have been abused have significantly fewer services available to them, even in large cities.
  • Healthy Relationships for Lesbians - Women who identify as lesbian, bisexual, Two-Spirit, and/or queer, face unique challenges in creating and sustaining healthy, satisfying intimate relationships for many reasons.
