Custody and Access: A Response to the
Department of Justice Discussion Paper
This document outlines the issues and concerns emerging during public consultations
concerning current federal family law legislation. The philosophy and principles
underlying possible law reform are discussed. Recommendations for law reform
are presented.

Child Support: Brief Prepared
for the Minister of Justice
This document critiques the proposed child support guidelines released by the
Department of Justice (March 1996). It outlines the objectives of the proposed
new guidelines and our position concerning child support. Various aspects of
the proposed guidelines (i.e., shared parenting, adjustments, ease of administration
and affordability, dispute resolution, language, support enforcement) were
evaluated on the basis of five months’ experience in applying the guidelines
with parents at FIT. Nine recommendations for revisions to the guidelines are
discussed.

Successful Family Transition: An Evaluation
of Intervention Strategies
This five year research project investigated interventions that promote successful
outcomes for children in changing families. The full research report describes
the research design, methodology, our model of practice, and the development
of a clinically useful measure of children's divorce adjustment. The research
findings are presented in detail with twenty tables illustrating key findings.
The final chapter discusses the policy, practice, and program implications
of this research. A bilingual Executive Summary of the report is available
(English / French presentation). A bilingual Fact Sheet outlining the major
findings and recommendations is also available (English /French presentation).

Annotated Bibliographies:
Families in Transition staff regularly review current materials for professionals, parents, and children. Based on our review, staff prepare annotated bibliographies. Our bibliographies provide a concise summary of the highlights of the books and journal articles including philosophical approach, the author's credentials (adult books), and suggested reading level (children's books).
Separation and Divorce
This series of bibliographies reviews books for adults, children (4
to 16 years), and professionals. Listings of interest to adults include
topics such as helping children cope with separation and divorce,
developing a coparental relationship, meeting the challenges of divorce,
shared parenting, rebuilding after separation, negotiating agreements,
and fathering after separation. Children's titles include fiction
and non fiction. Listings range from picture books for parents to
read to younger children, to books offering practical suggestions
for adolescents and school age children. Topics include feelings
children experience, difficulties that may be encountered, ways of
understanding family change, coping strategies children can implement,
and divorce-specific concerns such as time sharing and parents' new
partners. Listings for professionals discuss current trends in the
field, related clinical practice issues, and relevant research.

Stepparenting and Remarriage
This series of bibliographies reviews books for adults, children (4 to 16 years),
and professionals. Listings of interest to adults include topics such as
the journey involved in becoming a successful stepfamily, pitfalls and potentials
of stepfamily living, stepchild dilemmas, developing effective stepfamily
relationships, the challenges, and rewards of stepparenting. The non-fiction
listings of interest to children include topics such as understanding the
new family, loyalty concerns, stepparent myths, and roles and relationships
in the new family. Listings for professionals discuss current trends in the
field, related clinical practice issues, and relevant research.
