QUEER PARENTING EXCHANGE: WED. NOV. 22: COLLABORATIVE LAW AND MEDIATION

Nov. 22 topic: Collaborative Law and Mediation: Non-adversarial approaches to family creation and change.  Learn about the evolving practices of lawyers, mediators and counsellors who recognize the multidimensional nature of family conflict and work to keep people actively collaborating and out of court.

Speakers:

Marion Korn is an experienced family lawyer, educator, trainer and mediator who assists families in reaching negotiated settlements through Collaborative Practice and mediation and restricts her practice to out of court options. She has presented workshops and panels nationally and internationally on the subject of non-court approaches to dispute resolution and has trained lawyers, financial professionals, mediators and family specialists to become Collaborative practitioners.

Harvey Steinberg is a clinical psychologist with a degree in Child and Family Development.  He has been working with families and couples for 35 years and for the past 8 years has been working with parents in the process of separation and divorce, trying to help them to behave sensibly and advocating for the children.

Rachel Epstein coordinates the LGBT Parenting Network and also works as a mediator, with a particular focus on assisting LGBT parents and prospective parents to create families and resolve disputes in non-adversarial, out of court ways.

LGBT PARENTING PROGRAMS IN TORONTO: WE NEED A NEW NAME!

As you know, the LGBT Parenting Network and Queer Parenting Programmes at the 519 Church St. Community Centre are now supported by a new partnership between the Sherbourne Health Centre, The 519 Church St. Community Centre and FSA Toronto.  These three community agencies will be working together both to continue existing programming and to improve and expand services.  Given this new configuration, we need a new name for the entity that will be coordinating the work of all three agencies.   We’re looking for something simple, catchy and inclusive that captures the diversity that exists in LGBT parenting communities.

A prize will be awarded to the chosen name!! Please send your suggestions to: parentingnetwork@fsatoronto.com.

SURVEY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH LGBTQ PARENTS (and their parents): TELL US YOUR THOUGHTS!

The LGBT Parenting Network (FSA Toronto / Sherbourne Health Centre); Central Toronto Youth Services (CTYS); Children of Gays and Lesbians Everywhere (COLAGE) and the Queer Parenting Programmes at The 519 Church Street Community Centre have been talking about a growing need to expand programs for older children and youth who have LGBTT parents.

There are some programs for younger children with LGBTT parents but once kids move into their teens, there seems to be less and less available to them if they want to connect with others with similar families.

We want young people and their parents to let us know about what kinds of programs, activities, etc. you’d like to see. We’ve been brainstorming and getting excited about possibilities – you'll see ideas in this survey. We have a long list but we really want to know what you think.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your input. We will be using all feedback as we move forward to create effective new programs for teens and young adults.

The following survey should take only about 5 minutes to complete: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=379722536862
