LGBTQ FAMILIES IN THE SCHOOLS
LGBTQ parents across
the board are concerned about what happens for their kids in schools. The
LGBTQ Parenting Network (Sherbourne Health Centre) and Queer Parenting
Programmes at the 519 are launching a new project to make schools
more welcoming for our kids. We invite participation from all, including
parents, prospective parents, young people and teachers.
Last year at the Queer Parenting Exchange we brainstormed about how
to approach our work to make schools more friendly, welcoming and inclusive
of our kids. Themes we talked about included: Looking
at the Big Picture; Approaches in Local Schools; Website Possibilities;
Teacher Training and Curriculum; Parent / Teacher Connections; Media.
We plan to continue this discussion and get down to work.
Please come to the first meeting on:
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Sherbourne Health Centre, 333 Sherbourne (2nd floor)
For more info: 416 324 4100, ext. 5219; parentingnetwork@sherbourne.on.ca
LGBTQ parents, prospective parents, teachers, young people, friends
and allies, all welcome.
JEWISH LGBT FAMILIES: THE JOYS & CHALLENGES - PART II
Celebrate
the harvest at the Winchevsky Centre’s community celebration
of Sukkes on Sunday September 30, 2007 at 10:30
a.m. at The Winchevsky Centre, 585 Cranbrooke Avenue (north
of Lawrence, east off Bathurst). In keeping with
the sukkes tradition of ushpezin (inviting special guests
into the sukkeh), we are also hosting a discussion for Jewish LGBT
parents and prospective Morris Winchevsky School families.
The Sukkes celebration offers a variety of activities for people of all
ages, including: decorating the Sukkeh, learning about the holiday through
symbols, music and stories; making edible sukkehs and other arts & crafts
activities.
In addition, after a successful LGBT gathering and panel in March
2007, we are continuing an important community dialogue by offering
an opportunity for LGBT Jewish parents to connect and talk about common
concerns such as: the challenges of inter-faith, inter-cultural relationships
and families; issues for prospective parents; circumcision; holidays;
issues with families of origin; homophobia and heterosexism in Jewish
communities.
LGBT families are becoming more and more “out” and visible
in our communities. They pioneer new ways of building a family, and
new ways of being Jewish, yet they still face oppressive attitudes
as they challenge the heterosexual traditions of both mainstream and
progressive Jewish communities.
Children who attend with their parents are welcome to participate in the Sukkes celebration and everyone is invited for the barbeque lunch following the discussion.
Admission is $5.00 for non-members; $3.00 for members and LGBT guests, and includes a barbeque lunch. For more information, call (416) 789-5502.
QUEER / QUEER POSITIVE CHILDCARE CIRCLE LOOKING FOR FOURTH FAMILY
the idea
A co-operative daycare that runs 4 days a week in our homes starting in September 2007 in the downtown west end. The care will be 100% provided by the 4 families involved – parents will rotate shifts. Each family will be responsible for working 2 days a week – these can both be done by one parent or one day by each parent. Each family will get 2 days a week of daycare in which they are not working. Each day there will be four children and two adults. The children will be in a similar age range. The daycare will operate Tuesdays through Fridays.
the people
So far 3 of the 4 families are confirmed:
Tania and Diane and little Oscar. Tania is a carpenter and home renovator
with skills in astronomy and flowcharts. Diane is a gifted pottery
instructor, excellent cook and all around organized person. Oscar is
18 months old and loves to smile and dance. He's pretty chill.
Shlomit and Lev and little Zohar who is 14 months old. For the first year Shlomit was home with her and has just gone back to work & now Lev is home with her. (He has a lot of experience with childcare from before Zohar was born.) Zohar is pretty easy going and loves to be around other kids and friendly grown-ups. She can say "cheese" and "woof woof" and "more." We live in the St. Clair West area. We like to cycle and cook and be creative. And we both have a history of being activists.
Ginny and Jake and little Beto. Ginny does community justice work and is just getting into immigration consulting. She enjoys giraffes and matching dishes. Jake works as a program coordinator and community researcher in the trans community. Ginny and Jake speak Spanish with Beto. Beto is 11 months old and with your help enjoys walking to and fro, here and there.
the place
Right now it is being held in 2 different homes with a switch part
way through the week . The homes are near Trinity Bellwoods Park and
at St Clair and Oakwood.
the politics (there's always politics)
We will be a daycare that operates with social justice and kindness
in mind. Involved parents will be people who think about: anti-oppression;
anti-racism; gender; class; disability; culture; and the environment.
Activities and games will be done cooperatively and parents will keep
up a continued dialogue about what we are doing and how we are doing
it.
the cost
There will be no fees for this daycare, however there will be shared
costs for stuff and outings and each family will be responsible for
providing healthy lunch and snacks for one day each week.
the
decisions
Decisions will be made collectively by the families involved. Right
now the three families involved are sharing a potluck meal once every
two weeks to communicate about how things are going; solve problems;
and make decisions. A couple of months into it, we might only
need to have a potluck meal once a month.
get involved?

how it's going but are excited about a fourth family. Contact us at: Jake

THE FATHER VISIBILITY PROJECT: Calling all Canadian Gay/Bi/Queer/Trans/2-Spirited Dads, Granddads or Dads-to-be: 4 More Days to Submit Your Story!
The Father Visibility Working Group, an ad hoc group of men established in May 2007, is creating a web-based Father Visibility Project designed to increase visibility and a sense of entitlement to parent amongst gay/bi/queer/trans/2-spirited (GBQT2S) fathers and prospective fathers. The group and project spring from the research done by the Gay Father’s Research Cluster of FIRA (Father Involvement Research Alliance – www.fira.ca). Participants in the research from around Canada noted the extreme invisibility of GBQT fathers and support services, as well as a deeply felt lack of entitlement to father.
We believe that you as a gay/bi/queer/trans/2-spirited
(GBQT2S) father, grandfather, or prospective father:
Have unique experiences,
insights and wisdom to share that will be valued by others who are,
are contemplating, or in process of becoming fathers
Can decrease a sense of isolation and reinforce insights, pride and
possibilities for yourself and for other fathers and potential fathers
and their families.
To this end, the Father Visibility Project is collecting 10 stories with photos from fathers, grandfathers and fathers-to-be that reflect the ethno-cultural and geographic diversity of Canadian gay/bi/queer/trans/2-spirited fathers, and explore the many ways we become fathers. The most convincing and reaffirming stories are those from men "who've been there," or are “going through the process.” Whether you became a father before coming out, after coming out, are on your way or thinking about it, consider sharing your insights with those who could benefit from your journey. All selected submissions will be used in whole or in part, subject to editing. No one's writing will be changed or used without their permission.
If you are willing to write a brief story (300 -1000 words) about your experiences, challenges, discoveries, and joys of being or - thinking about being - a gay/bi/queer/trans father, please send your story and photo submission, including your name and contact information to:
Chris Veldhoven, queerparenting@the519.org,
416 392-6878 x109
Submission Deadline: September
30th, 2007.
If you are looking for ideas on how to focus your story, please
check out: www.the519.org/programs/Queer_Parenting/father_visibility.shtml.
This web project is supported by the LGBTQ Parenting Network - Sherbourne Health Centre (www.fsatoronto.com) and Queer Parenting Programmes at The 519 (www.the519.org).
All of your stories are important. Even if not selected, we thank you for your generosity in sharing.

GRADUATE STUDENT SEEKS FAMILIES HEADED BY LESBIANS AND GAY MEN
I am a graduate student at the University of Michigan
in clinical psychology and women's studies. I am hoping you might
be able to help with a study I am currently running. There is more
information about the study in the survey itself, but basically,
it is designed to look at psychological outcomes related to political
and social context for families headed by lesbians and gay men. I am primarily
interested in strengths, attributes, and happiness in these families and how
to best promote such outcomes. As a part of the study, I need LG parents in the
GTA to complete a 10-minute, anonymous online survey. If you have any
questions or concerns, please let me know.
