Community Initiatives: Best Buddies

Program description

As part of its network-building activities, in 2004 Options joined the Best Buddies program and is working together with George Brown College chapter. Now, eight George Brown Best Buddies students are meeting with Options clients to foster friendships.

In the Best Buddies program, university and college students are matched with people with intellectual disabilities according to their mutual interests. Students and their buddies communicate weekly and hang out twice a month. The friendships created evolve by spending time together at their own convenience - going to the movies, attending events or participating in recreational activities.

In brief, Best Buddies is about creating friendships between people who otherwise may not have had the chance to meet. These friendships help to break down barriers to inclusion and provide opportunities for shared experience, laughter and support.
