Community Initiatives
Program description
The individuals we support and self advocates tell us very clearly that they want to live their lives in the community.
They want jobs, friendships with non-labelled people, they want housing choices and they want to join in community recreation. They and we believe the places to find or create these opportunities are in our local neighbourhoods.
We also believe that there are people in our neighbourhoods who would like to partner with us and welcome the individuals we support into their lives.
None of us builds our lives or finds friends on our own. We depend on those natural support networks of our family, our friends and our work colleagues to help us make connections and open doors.
We also use our support networks as mentors, skill developers or advocates - we just don't always think about it in those terms.
At OPTIONS we began to look at how we could create those natural networks, mentors, skill developers and door-openers that all people depend on.
Out of this process we have created several Community Initiatives:
- Independent Seekers Group
- Best Budies
- Portuguese Mothers Support Group.
