Counselling Supports for Seniors
Clinical Services Offered for Older People who are Abused
The Seniors and Caregivers Support Service Unit at Family Service Association of Toronto provides clinical social work services to older people experiencing abuse. The team also works with family members who may be concerned that an older relative is being abused. From time to time the team also works with perpetrators of abuse.
The following services are offered:
- Crisis intervention
- Safety planning
- Counselling
- Individual client education
- Individual advocacy
- Group based programming
- Caregiver counselling
- Caregiver Education
- Caregiver Support groups
- Research and evaluation
- Systemic advocacy
- Supporting self-help groups
- Connecting to resources
Eligibility for service includes:
- Client lives or works in Toronto
- Age 60 years of age or older or a person with a disability 50 years of ago or older (exceptions are made on a case by case basis)
- Home visits will be conducted where needed and it is safe for staff to visit.
- Alternatives include community based contacts and/or office visits.
Clinical consultations for service providers
Telephone based consultations will be provided, on request, when service providers want to discuss cases of abuse. This service is available across the province.
Elder Abuse Consultation Team
The multi-disciplinary team meets once a month to discuss cases of abuse. Cases are brought forward to the team in an anonymous manner. Consultations are provided face to face or via teleconference.
Fee Structure
All clinical services provided to clients and service providers are provided free of charge.
