Corporate and group volunteer opportunities

In addition to making a difference in the life of people we work with, the top three reasons why your company/group should encourage its employees/members to volunteer with FSA Toronto are:

  • group volunteering encourages your team members to get involved in the community in which they live and work,
  • it gives them the opportunity to change the routine of their everyday work and participate in team building activities, and
  • helps them develop new networks and learn about other cultures.

Is your group ready to start volunteering? If yes, here is our current list of activities for group and corporate volunteers:

  • Providing and serving holiday meals (Thanksgiving, Eid-ul-Fitr, Christmas, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, etc.);
  • Developing and facilitating workshops on various topics (i.e. budgeting, knitting, arts and crafts, resume building, networking, etc. ); and
  • Helping with special events (children's fairs, mailings, site beautification projects, community displays).

In addition to these, if your group members have innovative ideas and skills that could benefit one of FSA programs, please let us know by e-mailing Mindy Khu, Volunteer Resources Assistant, at: mindykh@fsatoronto.com

Corporate volunteer profile:

In recent months, a number of corporate groups have lent their support to FSA. Read about how one team has contributed to community building through an FSA group-based volunteer opportunity.

PricewaterhouseCoopers

Last August, our Growing up Healthy Downtown program participated in a children’s fair and the coordinator approached FSA’s volunteer department for some volunteer assistance with booths at the fair. At the same time, PricewaterhouseCoopers, a large professional services firm, was looking for an opportunity for its employees to get involved in a project in the community.

This particular event was a great opportunity for a group of volunteers to work together, directly help in the community and provide the much-need support to put this special event together. Six volunteers arrived with their corporate t-shirts, smiles on their faces and a willingness to do whatever was required. It was a great afternoon in which the children had fun, the volunteers felt productive and the event itself ran smoothly.

In fact, the event went so well, PwC contacted us again for another opportunity to help out, this time at our Leonard Avenue housing initiative. We developed an opportunity for the group to prepare, serve and clean up a Thanksgiving meal. They worked with the coordinator at Leonard Avenue, created a menu and shopping list and a meal was born. Again, six volunteers arrived in the morning to prepare and serve the holiday meal to more than 50 residents. Residents and the volunteers had a great afternoon, and the food was superb. An additional unexpected benefit was that the PwC volunteers provided us with a cheque to cover the cost of the food.
